I could up my post count but I decided to post in one thread and let them fly.
1. One of my cars did not have door vapor barriers when I did a deep dive into all things door related. How can you get old buty, or whatever they used, adhesive off? 2. I am waiting for a front targa hook to show up soon. How tight should I adjust it to get the proper tension on the latch? I think my old one was too tight and that is why it cracked and needs replacing? 3. I have a proper set of red and black keys that work as they are supposed to now. I don't see myself ever having to go to a valet with this car, but if I did and they parked it out front because of how cool it is, what is a good solution for a key holder? If I put them both on the same chain, it is a pain to disconnect off the ring. Do I care? Any good solutions out there? *Bonus question, considering the biggest areas for storage are the front and rear trunks, why does the valet key only protect the glove box? What valuables are you going to have in there and not the front or rear trunk? Never really understood that. But hey, it was the 70's. |

Hmm, on my car it's the black (ignition) key that starts the car, and the red key unlocks the front and rear trunks and the glove box... Maybe somebody changed the locks once. That way you hand your ignition key to the valet but you keep the trunks key. Means you can safely store your Glock in the glove compartment. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) What i heard is that the red key is a Porsche key and the black key is a VW key... What I never understood is why they didn't put a lock on the engine lid release handle... |

1) Acetone
2) Lightly stiff 3) Black key - all locks. Red key - ignition only. Okay, I'll go check #3. Correct 3#: Black key - all locks. Red key - all but glove box. Regarding valet parking 50 years ago, didn't the valets have a secure lot, leave the door unlocked, & leave the key in the ignition? This permitted easy car juggling. IIRC. Well in my summer job stint as a parking lot attendant up at a north Tahoe casino, the cars got locked and the keys hung on a board. That job was a hoot. Guys would come out of the casino and ask you to go get their car. "It's a solid-gold Cadillac, you can't miss it!" Half the cars in the parking lot were... (IMG:style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif) They would hand me their half-finished drink, get in the car and drive off. It was 1970. |

My son who is now 22, wanted a 914 real bad when he was 16, he worked hard, was respectful to his mother and loved (where our other children hated) 914s.
After looking at 20+ 914s in various forms on-line we found one in Rhode Island that was original. Bad hell-hole but all else was there, very original - even the keys. We get the car home and we take inventory - brake pedal rubber original and barely worn......., engine compression was VERY good, all of the basics of an original car were in order. I go on a business trip and comeback to my son, did a bunch of this on the car - cut out the rusty floor boards, ripped out the carpets, got the car ready to weld the new floor panels in AND he ground the plastic off of both keys and made a laminated wood key in place of the black and red original keys. My instinct was to scream, but the keys looked really cool and our initials were on them........kids (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) |

Well mine look like this:
As far as I know, the black key is a VW key. But my car was sold in Europe as a "VW-Porsche" whereas in the US they were just "Porsche". Edit: however, after having spoken to the "meister" this morning, looks like my ignition key is non-standard. Guess it was changed. Practical for me in any case, black key starts the car and red key unlocks everything else. Not good for valet parking. |

All the Red Key / Black Key / Valet key got me curious. I've had both Red & Black keys since purchasing my 914 over fifteen years ago. I just went out and tried both.
Black Key: Works in the ignition and works to lock/unlock the rear trunk Red Key: Works in the ignition and works to lock the front trunk release (pull handle) Neither key seems to work in the glove box lock, but it was a little stiff and I didn't try to force it. This makes no sense, right? |

I just looked at the original manual (French). It says the black key works in the ignition and opens ALL the locks, but the red key only opens the doors, front trunk and works in the ignition (i.e. excluding rear trunk and glove box). Seems a strange arrangement, but that is what it says. So in principle you only needed the black key.
In any case mine has been changed and works differently - and looks like lots of others. |

So this is stock. Correct. Just tested this on the car. Merci beaucoup. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/beer3.gif) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/beer3.gif) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/beer3.gif) |

Makes some sense, the spare is in the front, for access to it if needed. I guess.

And fuel tank in the front...so yeah.
That's how mine is. Black is everything. Red is doors, frunk and ignition. |
